Zachrilege Cast #209z — solo

January 6, 2020

I know it looks like I did the same number twice but during the recording of part one of this week's show, I realized that I skipped one so to ensure that I have actually done 209 this will be 209z. I talked about my 2019 guests, some of the issues of the year, what we're going to see in 2020, and I reviewed a book and a TV show so spoilers there.

Zachrilege Cast #209 — Chris Mallard

Zachrilege Cast #209 — Chris Mallard

January 1, 2020

The Daily Atheist started ten months ago as one man’s quest to “content” as often as possible about atheism, politics, and gravy. Chris Mallard will explain whether he painted himself in a corner content-wise by calling himself The Daily Atheist. We talk about his atheism origin story, taking on a Christian apologist in a recent The Right to Reason that seemed like a quaint throwback, and how one decides to learn to play the cello.

Zachrilege Cast #208 — The Life After

Zachrilege Cast #208 — The Life After

December 13, 2019

Escaping from religion is one thing. Now that Brady and Chuck found not religion, what were they to do? They started a podcast. They preach to the ex-vangical choir, bringing on guests who help figure out how to navigate life after faith. We talked about trauma, how to recognize it and deal with it, and upcoming conference talking about that very subject, and of course dad jokes.

Zachrilege Cast #207 — Marie D’Elephant

November 29, 2019

Start with a base of a Christian upbringing, add a pinch of purity culture and a heaping helping of missionary work and baste it all with not believing any of that shit now and you’re getting an idea of Marie D’Elephant’s upbringing. She got out of religion, found her own way and then quit a pretty decent job to travel around the country/world with Dave Warnock. When you think everyone is autonomous, you start with yourself.

Zachrilege Cast #206 — Krista Cox

Zachrilege Cast #206 — Krista Cox

November 21, 2019

I couldn’t go one episode without discussing the atheist Voldemort -- I kid, after all I can still say the name of David Silverman three times without summoning an army of MRAs. Krista wrote an article about the history of how the atheist community got where it is today. The thing is, it’s totally ok to have smaller communities if need be. When did she decide to write it? What was the process like? How many times did she have to trash the whole thing? Which celebrity kitty would she adopt. Good thing there’s an interviewer here to take care of the important work.

Zachrilege Cast #205 — Justin Scott

Zachrilege Cast #205 — Justin Scott

November 11, 2019

Scott returns after a 142-episode gap. What has he been up to? It depends on the point of view. For politicians, it’s probably annoying them with pesky facts. For him, it’s education. He’s been asking Democratic candidates about having a secular outreach director and their response is to say what religion they are so fast that your head spins. Wait, I thought a religion was social justice-ing too hard. Anyway, it’s possible to emulate Justin and speak up for secular people which by the way should be all Americans.

Zachrilege Cast #204 — Podunker Polymaths

Zachrilege Cast #204 — Podunker Polymaths

November 11, 2019

There are probably some people checking this episode out hoping for some juicy tidbits on the now defunct Twitter war between me and . . . two white guys. Sorry to say I’m going back to being oblique and passive-aggressive about this because it was an utter and total failure. I’m not taking back any statements, just done with this nonsense. For most of this episode we’re looking forward to talking with atheists who actually care about social justice. Chris added Lyman to co-host their program and so far, so really good. It’s true that we might have an overlap in guests but we know that I am the interviewer and Chris has a nice beard. Plus Lyman’s there and he’s wicked smart.

Zachrilege Cast #203 — Mandisa Thomas

October 14, 2019

I live vicariously through others. Mandisa recently co-hosted the Women of Color Beyond Belief conference in Chicago. How fun/challenging was it to set up her own lineup of women of color? How did she keep her cool while being interviewed by a parrot? How does one get a Black Nonbelievers affiliate set up in their town?

If you want a one-sided discussion on David Silverman full of incel language and tough-guy talk from a guy who disappeared for a year, tried on the apologetic suit for a while five months later and now "has no regrets", feel free to listen to the episode of Free Thought Prophet. I've seen a shift in the atheist community in the past decade but I'm also aware that this dark side has been there all along. I think a show that consistently platforms white atheist dude leaders who have been credibly accused of sexual assault and rape should have to defend themselves. They do it, shall we say, poorly.

Zachrilege Cast #202 — Ami of Secular Soup

October 2, 2019

Due to time-zone issues, Ami didn't make the Skepticon recap with Amy and wanted to tell her side of the story. This side of the story involved vodquila and a rogue breakfast sandwich. We discussed her leaving the Mormon faith and of course she vagsplained.

Zachrilege Cast #201 — Rakeem Johnson

Zachrilege Cast #201 — Rakeem Johnson

September 26, 2019

Rakeem is the host of The Outer Voices podcast, a show that just celebrated its 100th episode. We first heard Rakeem on an episode of No Religion Required when he talked about French Camp with Morgan Stringer. Rakeem is from Mississippi and moved to Brooklyn to go to law school. Condolences. Their show (since there are three hosts) talks about social justice and sex in an informative and educational manner. Plus they have musical guests. His take on the Dave Chappelle Netflix special controversy is worth the price of admission.
